Sateen, tuulen ja luodin kestävät vaatteet

Viime viikolla Lontoossa käydessäni tein mielenkiintoisen löydön tavaratalon vaateosastolla. Esillä oli tavallisen näköisiä vaatteita, jotka kuitenkin tuntuivat tavallista selvästi painavammilta. Tarkastaessani erään takin kokoa huomasin takista roikkuvassa lapussa mielenkiintoisen sanan ”luodinkestävä”. Tarkastellessani vaatteita tarkemmin huomasin, että kaikki kyseisen räkin vaatteet olivat luodinkestäviä. Takkien lisäksi myynnissä oli luotiliivejä.

Isoa-Britanniaa on luonnehdittu maailman kehittyneimmäksi valvontayhteiskunnaksi. Maata on piinannut jonkinasteinen epäluottamuksen ja pelon ilmapiirissä 2000-luvun alusta lähtien. Yhteiskunnalliset jännitteet ja terroristi-iskut ovat johtaneet valvonnan asteittaiseen kiristymiseen. Poliisi on jopa alkanut levittää julisteita, joissa kansalaisia kehotetaan tarkkailemaan naapureitaan ja raportoimaan kaikesta epäilyttävästä.

Luodinkestävät vaatteet on signaali siitä, miten pukeutuminenkin saattaa heijastella epäluottamuksen ja pelon ilmapiiriä. Kiinnitin tavaratalossa myytävien luodinkestävien vaatteiden lisäksi huomiota siihen, että lehdissä käsiteltiin skandaalia, jossa lasten puukotuksen kestävinä vaatteina markkinoidut asusteet eivät läpäisseetkään käytännön testejä. Tapaukset ovat tietenkin ääriesimerkkejä mutta herättävät kysymyksen siitä, voiko vaatteiden turvallisuusominaisuuksistakin tulla kenties samantyyppisiä ”mukavia ja tarpeellisia” lisäominaisuuksia kuin veden- tai tuulenpitävyydestä. Luodinkestäviä tyylikkäitä asusteita myyvän brändin toimitusjohtajan Miguel Caballero sanoin: “It’s not just about bulletproofing with style anymore, bulletproof clothing is becoming a style.” Toivottavaa on tietenkin se, että kyseiset ominaisuudet jäisivät tulevaisuudessa tarpeettomiksi.
